About Mary
A native of Omagh, Dr. Mary Mc Laughlin is internationally acclaimed as a singer/arranger and teacher of the Irish singing tradition.
She completed a BA in English Literature (her A level in Irish was one of the qualifying factors) and PGCE at London University. Having spent many years teaching in special education she also developed her singing career in the British and Irish folk club scene.
In 1995 she was the lead singer on the Celtic Voices album that reached number 3 on the Billboard world music charts. In 1997 she moved to the USA where her love of Irish singing took first preference and in 2000 she authored a songbook called ‘Singing in Irish Gaelic’ on Mel Bay Publishing in which she devised a phonetic way of teaching Irish traditional songs.
In 2007 she founded a Gaelic choir called CórAinglí (Angelic Choir) for which she arranged all the material and taught over 20 non-Gaelic speakers to perform it.
Alongside this she has recorded Five CDs of her music including many arrangements of traditional Irish song. She currently has had over 2 million ‘plays’ on Spotify and 4 of her 5 albums are on Bandcamp.
In 2013 she obtained a certificate of sound therapy after obtaining a MA in Chant and Ritual Song in the Irish World Academy at University of Limerick. This led to a PhD in Irish Song Studies and a book on the Keen which she is currently preparing for publication with Inner Traditions in the USA.
She holds certificates of vocal teaching, shamanic studies and coaching and through her career has literally taught people from 5 to 90 years old.
In 2024 she was honoured to be invited to sing at the 40th anniversary of Oideas Gael in Donegal along with her long-time teacher, three-time winner of the Gaelic song Corn Uí Riada, Gearoidín Breathnach. Mary currently teaches internationally online.
